What are surfactants? What are their applications in daily life?

Surfactants are a class of organic compounds with special structures, boasting a long history and a wide variety. Traditional surfactant molecules contain both hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts in their structure, thus possessing the ability to reduce the surface tension of water—which is precisely the origin of their name.

Surfactants belong to the fine chemical industry. The fine chemical industry is characterized by a high degree of technological intensity, a large variety of products, high added value, wide applications, and strong industrial relevance. It directly serves many sectors of the national economy and various fields of high-tech industries.

The development of China’s surfactant industry is similar to that of the country’s fine chemical industry as a whole: both started relatively late but have developed rapidly. At present, the downstream applications of the surfactant industry are extremely extensive, covering various fields of the national economy, such as water treatment, glass fiber, coatings, construction, paints, daily chemicals, inks, electronics, pesticides, textiles, printing and dyeing, chemical fibers, leather, petroleum, and the automotive industry. Moreover, they are expanding into various high-tech fields, providing strong support for high-tech industries such as new materials, biology, energy, and information.

China’s surfactant industry has established a certain industrial scale. The production capacity of large-scale surfactant varieties has been significantly improved, which can meet the basic needs of customers and even allow for the export of some products to the international market. In terms of technology, the basic process technologies and equipment are relatively mature, and the quality and supply of main raw materials are relatively stable, providing the most basic guarantee for the diversified development of the surfactant industry.
